Durango
Mexico is situated in the northern region of the American continent linking the Gulf of Mexico on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west. It is encircled by the United States on the north and by Guatemala and Belize on the south and is divided into six tourist regions. These regions are Northern Mexico, Central Mexico, Southern Mexico, The Yucatan Peninsula, The Pacific Coast and The Baja California Peninsula.
Durango, a destination that has served as a vital filming location, lies in Mexico’s northwest region, 268 kilometers southwest of Torreon, Coahuila, and 310 kilometers northwest of the city of Zacatecas. The weather is mostly dry, with rainfall in the summer. The average year-round temperature is 18º Centigrade.
Some of the unique architecture includes Durango’s Cathedral, the Templo de Santa Ana and the Casa del Conde del Valle de Suchil. The miscellaneous designs present a costly mosaic of colonial and contemporary architecture. Other edifices, such as the Casa de Gobierno, house museums with astonishing art exhibits, old furniture, archaeological pieces, religious art, historical archives and collections that reflect the artistic talent of the region’s ethnic groups.
Amongst the most popular celebrations in the city of Durango are the Feria Nacional en la Ciudad de Durango, Durango National Fair which is held in July to commemorate the founding of the state capital, and the Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Refugio, a religious festivity that features traditional Matachin dance performances, polkas, regional dance, bands of strolling musicians and fireworks. Another main event is the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which offers music and dance on December 12th.
The city of Durango has a variety of cultural venues that host diverse events, such as conferences, concerts, theatrical performances and much more and also has numerous museums with exhibits that allow you to learn about the region’s cultural development.
