Mexico is situated in the northern region of the American continent linking the Gulf of Mexico on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west. Amongst the most popular celebrations in the city of Durango are the Feria Nacional en la Ciudad de Durango, Durango National Fair which is held in July to commemorate the founding of the state capital, and the Fiesta de Nuestra Señora del Refugio, a religious festivity that features traditional Matachin dance performances, polkas, regional dance, bands of strolling musicians and fireworks. Another main event is the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which offers music and dance on December 12th.
