Guanajuato
Mexico is situated in the northern region of the American continent linking the Gulf of Mexico on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west. It is encircled by the United States on the north and by Guatemala and Belize on the south and is divided into six tourist regions. These regions are Northern Mexico, Central Mexico, Southern Mexico, The Yucatan Peninsula, The Pacific Coast and The Baja California Peninsula.
Guanajuato is one of the popular tourist destinations of Mexico and cultural capital of the Bajio region in central Mexico. Guanajuato’s history could easily be told by visiting its old buildings, the very edifices that have become many of the city’s museums, which maintain and preserve regional culture.
Guanajuato experiences three varying climates semi-arid, template and semi-dry throughout the year and an average temperature of 17 degree Celsius. The city has also conserved its culture, history and memorials that include its civic and religious buildings, built in the colonial era during the mining boom between the 16th and 18th centuries.
The historical monuments at the city include the Santuario a Cristo Rey, where you can find a giant Christ statue constructed by Nicolas Mariscal in 1944. The monument, as evidenced by the materials used, is art deco style. Inside one can find a large metal crown that hangs above the altar and draws your attention to a dome ornamented with annulets and ribs.
The more important festive appointments in Guanajuato possess religious or historical significance. Among the important dates is Semana Santa, particularly that of Good Friday when the Virgin of Dolores is celebrated. The other festives include El Dia de la Cueva, which falls on July 31 and is a popular fiesta to honor San Ignacio de Loyola. On September 28, a military and civilian parade takes place to commemorate the taking of the Alhondiga de Granaditas. Another recent tradition is the Classic Callejonada, when musicians take to the streets and belt out festive serenades.
