Hermosillo
Hermosillo is one of Mexico’s most popular destinations, and is well known for the quantity of cultural related attractions and monuments that the city has embraced. It is located almost 281 kilometers to the south of Nogales border. Hermosillo is the state capital of Sonora and is known as Sun City. The city experiences a semi-desert type of climate which is hot, with an average temperature of 25º Celsius on a clear sunny day.
The city of Hermosillo boasts beautiful old architecture of diverse styles and has splendid architectural attractions lined along its wide avenues, such as the Cathedral and the Palacio de Gobierno. One can also find a variety of regional crafts made by Seri, Yaqui and Pima artisans. Among the most notable crafts are mesquite wood and ironwood sculptures in the form of animals, masks, baskets and necklaces made of seashells, rattlesnake vertebrae, fish and seeds. One can also find attractive belts made from deer hoofs, musical instruments, skirts, blouses, tablecloths, cloth napkins and robes.
Hermosillo’s most significant celebrations draw on national religious customs and traditions of the region’s ethnic groups. The important festive appointments in Hermosillo are La Fiesta de la Candelaria in February, Virgin of Guadalupe Day on 12th of December and Day of the Dead in November. During Holy Week, the Mayo and Yaqui Indians celebrate with Matachin and Pascola dance performances.
In spite of the intense urbanization that is undergoing in Hermosillo, the city has conserved its rich art, history and architectural memorials that include various museums. These museums offer a broad overview of Sonora’s culture, including information about the customs of regional ethnic groups. Hermosillo and its surrounding areas also host important sporting events that draw renowned figures in bicycling and fishing. The tournaments take place in attractive natural locale such as the Sonoran desert and along the coast of the Sea of Cortez.
Presently, Hermosillo experiences a sharp social, economic and population growth derivative of the strategic position of the locality and the high level of well-being and quality of life that is enjoyed with respect to other places of Mexico.
