Guanajuato: Romantic Legend at the Alley of the Kiss

Accommodation Price Comparison

Guanajuato is widely known for the beauty of its architecture and the richness of its culture. For that reason, it is considered the Cultural Capital of Mexico. Its name comes from the tarasco word “Quanaxhuato”, which means “mountainous place full of frogs”. The name was given after a huge mountain that resembled a dig frog according to the indigenous people from the area. Guanajuato has been recognized as a World Heritage City due to the heavy material for educational and historical purposes. Therefore, Guanajuato is full of touristy and historical attractions that help increase the magical vibes of its streets. One of these attractions is known as “El Callejón del Beso” (Alley of the Kiss).

The Alley of the Kiss is located in the middle of town, and its popularity is based on the fact that the alley only has 68 centimeters of width and both balconies are almost together, the right distance “for a kiss”. The Alley is just at the bottom of “El Cerro del Gallo”, in a poor and crowded neighborhood that already existed in the 18th century. The name of alley corresponds to an old legend that tells the story of an impossible love between two youngsters. According to the legend, their families were enemies; reason why they were forbidden to see each other. Nevertheless, the couple found out their way to clandestinely date in those balconies. One day, the father of the girl found them right in the moment when they were about to kiss each other. The father, blinded by fury, killed his daughter by stabbing a dagger on her back.

Local people believe that couples who kiss on the third rung will enjoy seven years of complete happiness. Therefore, this is a must for couples visiting the romantic city of Guanajuato. If you have the chance, stop by and do not miss the opportunity to visit El Callejón del Beso.
