Teotihuacan
Mexico is situated in the northern region of the American continent linking the Gulf of Mexico on the east and the Pacific Ocean on the west. It is encircled by the United States on the north and by Guatemala and Belize on the south and is divided into six tourist regions. Teotihuacan is the place where men become gods, is an archaeological zone in the State of Mexico. It lies between the towns of San Juan Teotihuacan and San Martin de las Piramdes, 48 kilometers northeast of Mexico City. The climate is semi-dry, with an average year-round temperature of 15º centigrade. At Mexico City’s north and west bus terminals and at Metro stations Indios Verdes, Martin Carrera, Basilica and Autobuses del Norte you can catch buses to the archaeological zone.
These are among the most significant pre-Hispanic ruins in the Americas due to their masterful urban layout, the monumental architecture and the strong religious and political influence that Teotihuacan held over other cities. In addition, it is one of Mexico’s most visited archaeological sites. Superb ceremonial, social, civic and residential structures were built around the ancient metropolis’ main avenue. Among the most inspiring constructions are the Piramides del Sol y Luna, the Templo de Quetzalcoatl, the Patio de los Jaguares, the Palacio de Quetzalcoatl and the Palacio de la Ciudadela.
Not only does Teotihuacan boast one of Mesoamerica’s most fine examples of ancient architecture, but it is also a very religious place, according to those who continue to observe pre-Hispanic traditions. During your visit to Teotihuacan, you will also find an on-site museum and the Centro de Estudios Teotihuacan, Teotihuacan Research Center which are devoted to promoting tourist services and the study of Teotihuacan’s ancient cultures.
